How can the Blood of Jesus Cleanse Sins?
Revelation 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
With the sounds of hundreds of soap lyrics ringing in our ears, it is reasonable to wonder how the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses sin. Now if you are spiritual, you may think you already know the answer, but please bear with me so that the unlearned or un-concerned can be enlightened.
Obviously, we must establish a context. The subject begins with Adam and Eve.  Do you remember that fig leaves did not cover their indiscretions. They had to have animal skin clothing and God ordered that. Let's turn a page and find that Cain's offering of veggies was rejected, but the bloody sacrifice that Abel offered was accepted.  Keep going and we find that 90% of the offerings ordered by God to Moses and Aaron involved the shedding of blood. Every sin known to man ultimately required shed blood to remedy or remove it. This whole article could be summarized in the following statement, "God required blood to be shed by something to redeem men to righteousness (right with God!). He knows why and he leaves a bunch of clues to let us find out.... if we are interested.  I will ask some questions, you go find the answers. O.K.? Why did God require the blood of different animals for different things?  Why did God require the blood to be poured out, sprinkled, or dabbed on distinct occasions? Why did God require the blood of unblemished animals when applied for redemption? I hope you are not getting tired of the word, "required." I cannot find a better term.
Some will say that all those blood sacrifices were part of the law given to Moses and are not  relevant to the New Testament doctrines. I think they had better read the New Testament at least once before they say such. A respected radio preacher said that the blood of Jesus was no more efficacious than his was.  I haven't respected that radio preacher for about 22 years, many others have forgotten he said and wrote that. So that puts a different perspective on my original question, but does not effect the answer, in my opinion. How does the blood of Jesus cleanse sin?
Mind if I sing a song or two?  Sing with me... "What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus."
"There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Emmanuel's veins, and sinners plunged beneath that flow, lose all their guilty stains." Wow! that is my kind of music!
I am also convinced that it was expedient for Jesus to die for the people. He had to suffer the death of the cross. God put a curse on Him. Deut. 21:23
But, the blood that was shed from the crown to the spear is the only thing that actually cleanses sin: Heb 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
I believe God has the Ark of the Covenant in Heaven with Him and if we could get a quick tour today, we would still see blood all over it. You may have reason not to see that, but not a verse.
Because, Jesus is still saving sinners today and that blood he shed 2000 years ago is still doing the job of cleansing sinners of their venial & menial sins.  I use that term in case there is a Catholic reading this. Baptists just say, "All our sin!!" Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin.  It is not the blood of animals, or Philippino's who flagellate themselves that will wash away sin.  Only the blood of Christ washes away sin.
How do I know that Jesus blood washes sin?  Because God says it does and I have His Word on it!
