Christian Service

There is an unlimited number of ways that a Born Again Christian can serve the Lord. Some of them are what is called full time servants, most of them are volunteers. Some of the services are performed within the confines of a local Church, some of them are an outreach of that local Church. It is not beyond reasoning that there can be no real service outside the authority or auspices of a local New Testament Church. A person cannot be a real benefit to the cause of Christ outside the base of his or her local Church. "What do you do with a soul you win to Christ?" If you persuade someone to get right with God, doesn't Church enter the picture of getting right with God?
Most importantly, if the Church is not important, why did Jesus found it upon Himself, love it and give Himself for it?

Romans 12:1,2 tells us:

1  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

These verses give words to this idea of God's service. They are not only an appeal for us to give ourselves to service, but also show us several things about this service. God's mercy allows us to serve Him. Sacrifice means that we hold nothing back, there can be no half-hearted servants of God. Any service that we do has to be acceptable to God. It is reasonable that we would serve Him. (Lost people don't get this!)
We cannot serve God and mammon (the world). The world's ideas of serving God is all flesh.  We have to have a transformed mind, to truly serve God. God's perfect will which also is good and acceptable will only result through a completely yielded servant heart.
. It does not take a deep study to wake up to the fact that anything that is truly of service to God, pretty well has to be performed by Him through a willing vessel. When we truly sacrifice our bodies to Him as the above verses admonish, then we have literally abandoned ourselves for His purpose. Yes it is scary, yes it is ridiculed by the world, and most Christians will not go that far. But if it is the perfect will of God that you seek then climb upon the altar feet first.
Now back to service. Preachers accomplish more in their preaching if it is done in the Power of the Holy Spirit. Pastors make better Pastors if they are yielded to God instead of the Deacon board or the Ladies Raid Society. Missionaries reach further into the Jungles, and into deeper valleys, and unto far flung islands when God is working through them. Church janitors become a light for Christ when they mop, dust and clean for God's glory Van and bus drivers look at themselves as going out in the hedges and highways seeking souls when they have surrendered their own attitudes to God. Singers are no longer bent on pleasing , or impressing the congregation when they sing for God's glory. Sunday School teachers thrill when God is truly using them to teach the precious word of God. No longer are they the baby sitters for a bunch of kids.
A little more attention to God's perfect will. Read the above verses again. Look for the word, "ACCEPTABLE." The fact that this word is emphasized, means that there can be service for God that is not acceptable. I remind us of Cain in Genesis.
I believe he was sincere in his offering to God. I believe he was proud of his crops and felt God would be pleased with his sacrifice of the work of his hands. It was not acceptable to God.
