One of the weakest areas of Christianity is the way we speak. It is evident that many Christians have no idea that they need to clean up their speech.
Euphemism: A mode of speaking by which a delicate word or expression is substituted for one which is offensive. Or substitution of inoffensive expression for one that may be offensive or have unpleasant associations. (example: "pass away" is widely used for die.)
Slang: A class of expressions not generally approved of, as being inelegant or undignified.
Cursing: A violent expression of evil upon others.
"My Grandmother would say he doesn't have a very big vocabulary." that meant he or she wasn't very smart and had to use these bad words to express themselves.
"God " Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Gosh, Golly or Gee = euphemisms for God or Jesus
Darn=a euphemism for Damn
Heck - short for Hell
Freaking, bunk, crap, shoot are each euphemisms for cursing.
Then there is cursing, vulgar, crude, of very bad taste things we should be careful of.
Do not say, "Kick your B**t." When speaking: it just sounds better to say I will spank you bottom if speaking to our own children. By the way we should carry out those threats.
Do not announce publically that you have to go "p-__" If necessary to say anything just say you have to use the restroom.
James 3:10, "Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be."
James had spent most of chapter 3 telling of the evils of the tongue, announcing that it was like a hot coal out of hell itself.
Our world has removed almost every vestige of decent speech, and we as Christians can be influenced to fall back on the slang and vulgarities of the crowd. Most people who watch TV regularly have become so calloused that they do not realize that their vocabulary has been polluted. Hollywood has steadily gnawed away at our conversational mores. Subject matter that should only be discussed between a husband and wife is openly addressed on all of its productions. Most movie stars do not have morals and they are doing their best to change the world to their depravities.
There is certainly one way that a committed Christian can stand out from the crowd… simply watch your language.
I am really glad that I had a wonderful mother who knew how to use a bar of soap, besides washing behind my ears. My dad was a mechanic, so he had to have a tough bar of soap. He used "Lava" soap. Not only was it a distasteful soap, but it also had grit mixed in it. You know I don't remember mom having to use that remedy very often. It really worked well. I grew up with an inborn cultured vocabulary and have never had any regard of anyone who were too ignorant to know or use proper English. Having Jesus in my heart, gave me an internal unction.
Matthew 12:36, "But I say unto you, That every idle word that man shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement."
REMEMBER: People who talk a lot will have a lot of accounting to do. Unless it is for the LORD and not idle talking.
