One of the most frustrating things for us who have trusted Jesus personally, is that we cannot convince many of our friends, family and neighbors of what we have found in Christ. When we try to tell them about what happened to us, they either laugh, get upset or look at us as though we have some sort of mental disease. They pull away and eventually we lose contact; at least communicatively.
There is a verse in 1 Corinthians that we must never forget:
"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Cor. 2:14
This verse of scripture is God's explanation to our experiences that are mentioned above.
So since this is true, then how do we reach our friends, family and neighbors? How can we get through to them. There is no question that we have the responsibility of getting through to them, because Jesus told us to go into all the world teaching and preaching the gospel. This preaching of the Word of God is the only means by which men can be saved. The only way a person can see or enter Heaven is by being born again. Did you notice the emphasis on the word "see?" A close look at that scripture and others (including our text.) shows us that until a person is born of the Spirit of God, he or she has no ability to receive or know the things of God. Romans 10 tells us that in order for a person to be saved they have to believe upon the Lord Jesus with their heart and confess with their mouth the Lord Jesus. That same chapter says they cannot believe, unless they have heard, and they cannot hear unless they have a preacher. Every Christian is called to be a preacher of the Word of God. God has chosen that through the foolishness of preaching, men are saved.
In order for a natural man to become a spiritual man, he needs to be preached to. That preaching must be predominately laced with scripture for scripture is the sword of the spirit. When we preach the Word, the Spirit of God thrusts that Word down into the heart of the hearer and thusly, the sinner is brought face to face with his sin and his shortcoming before a Holy God. The Word of God is absolute truth and 1 Corinthians 14 tells us that when the unbeliever hears the preaching that his heart will be touched and he will admit to God. That heart work is what causes God to regenerate a lost soul to life. The Spirit of Jesus enters into the body of a person who receives him and takes up abode for eternity. When the Spirit of God enters into a person several things take place. Romans 8 tells us that there is no more condemnation from God towards that person. That person is no longer in bondage to the sinful nature, even though he is still a sinner. For the first time the Word becomes like sincere milk and nourishes the newborn Christian. He has an insatiable desire to know more about the Lord Jesus, as to who He is and what He wants with, "Me."
For the first time the Bible begins to make sense. Verses fall into place. The puzzle of life begins to form a picture and it is truly real. By their fruit ye shall know them.
So, it is by the preaching of the Word of God that we reach our friends, family and neighbors. They will listen a couple of times at least. Then if they do turn away, we are left with the power of prayer. We can pray that the Word they heard will have its effect or that someone else can add to that Word. We can petition the throne of God's mercy on their behalf. God does work in mysterious ways in order for men to hear His message. He has been known to speak to the heart of a Christian servant to go out of his way in order to preach the Gospel to someone who is prepared to receive that message. Acts 10. The Lord uses preachers to wake people to His saving grace and power.
